Тема доклада: The overbooking compensation plan for Russian airlines

Аннотация: Overbooking is one of the most financial successful practices in Revenue Management (RM). In-stead of how best to price or allocate capacity, which is the goal of most of RM techniques, the focus of over-booking is increasing the total volume of sales when there are significant cancellations. Nowadays the Russian legislation in passenger air transportation industry creates such conditions when airlines do not meet any penalties for denied boarding but some risk of reputational losses. Nevertheless, many Russian airlines refuse to adopt overbooking. Most of them do not have IT solutions to incorporate overbooking proce-dure in their operations correctly, the others just try to avoid any reputational losses. An analysis of overbooking effectiveness is done for flights that are operated by the Russian airlines under the assumption that a “denied boarding algorithm” advocated by the authors is accepted. This algorithm implies an alternative route offering and/or compensation to denied boarding passengers at overbooking flights operated by the Russian airlines. We numerically simulated the booking process with the compensation algorithm that was based on nonlinear compensation function. The obtained results demonstrated that the financial effectiveness of overbooking proce-dure was dependent the fare classes under overbooking and on the consumer behavior, namely if a passenger prefers to be the volunteer or should be bumped against his/her will. A specially designed program complex was used to numerically model the processes of booking limits calcula-tions, air-ticket sales and passengers’ registration (including compensation for denied boarding passengers). The program complex was created in mathematical computer environment Wolfram Mathematica 11.0.
